The environment
Charcoal production in Ecuador involves cutting down forests to obtain firewood, which is then cooked for 12 days in bunkers covered in mud and grass.
The felling of forests is the result of the expansion of livestock, and this is where the charcoal-maker comes in, offering his services to clear the area in exchange for the production of charcoal; this is why charcoal of different species can be found on the market, mixed in the same bag, which is a good quality charcoal and, most of the time, low-temperature, fast-consuming and with a high percentage of ash at the time of torrefaction.
Demand for charcoal is met by nomadic, low-tech manufacturing families scattered across rural areas, which is why they are often unable to guarantee a permanent supply to their customers.
Carbon Biritute has developed a technology to improve the production process, using sustainable wood from eucalyptus plantations and avoiding the felling of natural forests, to obtain the best charcoal, uniform, easy to ignite, reaching temperatures in excess of 300°C, lasting over 4 hours, without sparks and with less than 5% ash.
